In 2011 while Mr. M and I were vacationing in Paris, we strolled crossed the Seine, and noticed a proliferation of padlocks adorning the chain-link fence of the bridge. The idea is that you write your name and that of your true love on the lock, attach it to the bridge, then fling the key in to the river. A tangible symbol of your undying and unbreakable love. Since then I have discovered that this romantic gesture has turned in to a worldwide trend, uniting lovers and causing headaches for city preservationists from LA to China.

Then last spring I was asked by Annie & Holly of Daughter of Design to help incorporate this romantic gesture in to a June wedding in Montauk, New York they were planning. The couple had tiny locks engraved, one for each of their guests. Little number tags were then added to the key for the table assignment. Here are a few pictures from the wedding.

If you are ever in Paris and want to leave your lock, just make sure you attach it to the correct bridge. According to an article found on Bonjour Paris, a website dedicated to Parisian tourism, “There are two bridges in Paris with the locks, you must be very careful which bridge you put your lock on because Pont des Arts is for your committed love, while Pont de l'Archevêché is for your lover.”
